The owners of the Monastery Restaurant brought their love of regional cuisine with them to downtown Norfolk, and the dark interior, small windows, and candlelit interior give the restaurant a cloistered atmosphere even at lunch, making any gathering feel intimate. The restaurant has not lost its European charm with the passage of time and still serves specialties like wiener shnitzel, crispy duck, and strudel. Roast goose is a seasonal special. The lunch menu contains scaled-down versions of dinner items. Staff used to wear friar's-robe uniforms until a candle ignited a robe one evening; servers now wear civilian clothing.
